Raised in Colorado, Mike started playing guitar when he was 18. After a few years as an unenthusiastic advertising major, he decided to pursue music seriously and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a performance degree in Classical Guitar.
While at CU Mike was fortunate to study with legendary educator and guitarist Dale Bruning. A transformational experience, Mr. Bruning became a role model not just as a guitarist and educator, but as a human being.
After Graduation Mike moved to Seattle where he was able to join the Hal Sherman Big Band as well as forming the Mike Hyland Quartet. While in Seattle Mike earned a Master in Teaching at the same time he was working at a tremendous elementary school University Child Development School.
Upon returning to Denver to be closer to family Mike returned to get a Masters in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy from CU Boulder and was able to play with many fantastic musicians.
